Here are a couple of charcoal sketches I did one weekend in Nelson, about 7 years ago now. Gosh time flys.

These are both just simple charcoal stick over a plain watercolour wash (on water colour paper).

For any non-Nelsonians, the sketch above is of Arrow Rock in in Nelson Bay, near the entrance to the harbour. The rock is commonly known as “Fifeshire” Rock, after the first immigrant ship to arrive in Nelson (in 1842) that ran aground on it on its way out of the harbour and ultimately broke its back when it couldn’t be freed.

The sketch below is of the monument at the top of the “Centre of NZ” walk, that looks down over Nelson city.
