A Question of Density

A Question of Density

The latest NZIA newsletter discusses the origins of the age-old question of high-density housing in NZ and the rural mindset of Pāk󠄁ehā kiwis. The single-family home is being celebrated across NZ, by the general populous and politicians alike, as the only desirable option and resisting urban densification. It seems as we try to save the idea of the lifestyle block or ¼ acre lot by providing everyone the opportunity of rural living in an urban environment we risk its extinction through the resulting urban sprawl. With ever expanding city limits and no real thought put into true Urban Intensification, we eat more and more into our productive land and rural landscape. Does there need to be a shift in the kiwi mindset to embrace higher density living? A change to old development regulations? Will there be a political party or government with the metal to propose the radical change needed? I guess we are about to find out.
